Since its beginnings, La Marea has had one maxim in mind: to distance itself from the traditional press, from what was commonplace
The inspiration for La Marea comes from afar. More specifically, from a German newspaper founded at the end of the 1970s. Under the name Die Tageszeitung, this environmentalist newspaper positioned itself as an alternative to the traditional press and declared itself as an "irreverent, commercially independent, intelligent and entertaining" newspaper. It is also a newspaper of reference for the German left, which managed to overcome the economic crisis by transforming itself into a cooperative. In Spain, the medium that has replicated Die Tageszeitung's formula has been La Marea.
In this service to the public, La Marea emphasizes those issues that affect society, with a left-wing ideological perspective. Daniel Ayllón, journalist of La Marea, recognizes that "the media is a 'candy' for the left", but he assures that they have armored themselves so that no power appropriates it as theirs. In this way, they prevent any partner with any contribution from having more than one vote, and they do not keep the project.
The newspaper emphasizes its commitment to rigorous and committed journalism, in-depth reporting and culture, all of which is free from both business and political interests, and has the following principles: freedom, equality, secularism, defense of the public, social rights and movements, decent work and housing, and the self-determination of peoples.
Equality is a principle they take into account not only when publishing the news, but also in La Marea. 100% of the positions of responsibility in La Marea are occupied by women (management, directors, presidency and vice-presidency). Another measure they have adopted is a temporary offer of 24% discount for women who want to subscribe, as a sign of the salary gap between men and women.
La Marea is known for its in-depth analysis and reporting on "political lobbies", with a clear commitment to investigative journalism. Corruption and abuse of power by the most powerful is an issue that will always happen. For this reason, La Marea carried out an investigation called #YoIBEXtigo, which analyzed the 35 companies that make up the IBEX and the cross-interests that orbit around them. Another of the most well-known projects they carried out was on gender violence, a scourge that is very present in our country today. In 2014, with the research project #PorTodas they wanted to pay tribute to the 55 women murdered for this reason.
Taking the ecological doctrine of Die Tageszeitung as an example, La Marea has focused on the climate crisis with the magazine Climática. From Climática, they have understood the problem in which our planet finds itself and the bleak future, if we do not all contribute. The director of La Marea, Magda Bandera, affirms that it is not an attractive topic, and that public awareness is necessary because "it will condition our lives for the rest of our lives completely”.
