According to Reuters Institute investigations, the Latin American region is the 2022 world's most dangerous place for journalists.
In 2022 between 30 and 42 journalists were murdered in the Latin American region. This makes it the most deadly area for journalists. This factor is very striking considering that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been at maximum tension in the same year. Of these recorded murders in Latin America, more than a dozen were committed in Mexico, making it one of the most dangerous countries in which to practice journalistic communication.

187 of the country's journalists have recited a letter to the country president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. They have immediately urged him to cease his harassment of journalists who, in one way or another, exercise a critical genre. However, the 187 participants know that it will not come to fruition. Their president has already publicly labeled them as hypocrites, puppets, and/or elitists.
There is a lack of information freedom in Spanish-speaking areas, not only Mexico suffers from this lack of fundamental rights. Not every type of journalism is well-seen or accepted. Some investigative journalists avoid going to the regions for uncovering scandals just because they are afraid due to all the murders there have been. Especially for them, journalism is a very dangerous and complex profession.
Rocio Gallego, the co-founder of La Verdad Juarez, a very relevant Mexican media, declares that journalism is very complex nowadays in the area of the Aztec country. The difficulty is so great that her media has suffered threats that have forced the corporation to take serious protection measures. Rocio also states that it is becoming more and more complicated to practice journalism due to threats, murders, or adverse conditions for the practice of journalism.

It is difficult to know what 2023 has in store for us. So far, several journalists see no improvement in the near future. The Committee for the Protection of Journalists urges better protection against such acts, but it is not clear that this is possible for the time being.
